the weekend. by orange

This weekend was a-mazing.  Blue skys, 75 degrees, enough said.  It was one of those weekends where you forget about how we've just had 20-odd days of rain in a row and feel the promise of a fantastic summer ahead.  The weekend was filled with the following:

- seeing Get Him to the Greek: I'd recommend it
- running with Violet: man those 2 miles kicked my ass
- some walking lunges: ouch...the backs of my legs hurt even when I sit down...not a good sign.
- stop at Crabtree & Evelyn for this fantastic hand lotion
- some oggling at Banana Republic at their new items
- a stop at Metropolitan Market for a picnic dinner
- taking in the sun at Seward park while eatting some yummy food
- playing some catch, because the husband and I are sometimes 5 year olds together
- sleeping in
- dual birthday party
- catching up with some of my favorites at Cactus on Alki

All in all...a perfect weekend.

How was yours?

The Weekend Briefly. by orange

Here is a bit of what this weekend included:

1. Good conversation and delicious food on a double date with our good friends EC & Matt at Vios Cafe.  EC and I didn't sway from our normal entree: the best greek salad Ever.

by karma free cooking

2. Of course...mulitple episodes of my current obsession: Friday Night Lights.  If you watch(ed) the show...you'll understand where I'm at in the series based on these pictures.

3. Running on Alki with Violet

4. Cat Nap...but of course...

5. Some early birthday present shopping: New Duvet, Sheets, Towels...Sadly, the Macy's we went to didn't have all that we needed, so when I have everything together I'll show some picutres of the new and improved Master Bedroom.  Here is a preview:

6. Suprise 30th birthday party for our friend John.  His wife really pulled it off.  How could we tell?  When they got home from dinner John immediately went to the bathroom and didn't shut the door - classic move.  But then, to his surprise, the whole party heard this action.

7. Easter Brunch at Blu Water Bistro.  Belgian Waffle delicious-ness.

8. Some work...and some Bed, Bath and Beyond for the perfect shower mat to match our new towels.

9. Listening to this fantastic new single by Band of Horses:

10. Finishing up the weekend with dinner at St Clouds for their first Sunday of the month Fried Chicken Meal with our friends Katie, Jared and their adorable Signe.  Who could not love this sweet thing?  And she is really this smiley...all the time.

I hope you all enjoyed the weekend as well!!

Resolution Check In. by violet

It’s been a month since I laid out my resolutions for the year. So I thought I would provide a little status update on how things are going so far.

Floss twice a day every day
This has been going great! I’ve been flossing after lunch and before bed. The calendar reminder has been really helpful. Might be TMI but my gums are bleeding way less than they used to ever before. I’m almost looking forward to my next dentist appoint in July.

My collection of floss

Improve Posture
I haven’t been doing any of the exercises that the therapist gave me. But I am working of being more conscious of my posture, especially while I’m sitting at work all day. I’m thinking that I will start to add the exercises to my half marathon training.

Run a 10K in under an hour
Think I’ve got Orange pretty much on board with this one. We are running the Eugene half marathon again in May and I’ve been eyeing a couple of 10Ks in late summer, early fall. I want to give myself at least a few chances to get this done. The only problem is as we’ve started training, I’ve realized that this is going to be even more of a stretch than I thought. It’s going to take some serious hard work.

My trusty running shoes and a fancy new watch (thanks, J.!)

Go to London
Slow progress here as well. J. and I are looking into it but it’s going to be tough to schedule and save up enough money to go. But I’m working on it. I’ve got my eyes on the prize.

This Year. by violet

Even though I don’t feel like I need a new year to make a change, there’s something about the turning of the calendar page that makes it seem natural to take some stock of your life.

First off, I’m totally with Orange, in that there are a number of these resolutions that have fallen by the wayside. And, I also love the VitaCraves and currently have a bottle of the sour gummies on my desk at work.

So I decided to aim for an accomplishable list of goals for the year.

Floss twice a day, every day
I started this one a little bit before the New Year mostly because I had an impending dentist appointment. The amazing news? After just two weeks of this plan, the hygienist said she noticed a big difference in my tartar build-up and gum bleeding. Talk about inspiration to keep going.

Some help to keep me going: Besides that awesome news from the dentist, I know carry floss in my purse and even have some chilling on my desk at work. I set up a recurring calendar appointment at 1:00 p.m. every weekend to remind me to floss. It’s actually a nice mental marker to get back to work after my lunch-time blog surfing.

Run a 10K in under an hour
After my last half marathon this past summer, my dad threw this challenge out there. I didn’t think very much of it at the time but it’s kind of stuck in my brain ever since. I’m not a very fast distance runner so some of you may be scoffing at this goal. But for me it’s enough of a stretch to my pace to make me nervous but not so much that it’s out of reach. I think the right training and the right race this one is totally achievable.

Some help to keep me going: My awesome running partner, Orange. I’m not sure if she’s totally on board with the idea yet but I’m working on it.

Improve Posture
I’ve always had horrible posture. By the end of the day my shoulders are usually up to my ears and my chin is practically on my keyboard. The last time I went to get a massage the therapist actually gave me some exercises to do. Really I’ve been trying to be more aware of it to help make it better.

Some help to keep me going: I’ve got the exercises ready to do. But I get the feeling that this one is going to be tough.

Go to London
Two of my favorite people and former roommates have been living in London for the last year and a half. I’ve been meaning to get over here but between work and the cash it just hadn’t happened yet. I’m going to change that this year.

Some help to keep me going: Katy and Danny are probably coming back this summer. It’s kind of now or never.

So that’s my list. And now it’s out there for all 7 of you who read this. But maybe putting it out there will help keep be accountable. What's on your list?

bad ass runner. by orange

As mentioned earlier in the blog, I have signed up for two 1/2 marathons this year.  To get me psyched up for the one this weekend...

You know you are a bad ass, hardcore runner when:

1) you buy shoes for the fit - not the style
2) you buy shoes specifically for running, and running only
3) you run in the rain, the snow and the wind - all at once
4) you feel the need to spit while running
5) co-workers ask: "hey do you run?  I think I saw you out running the other day"
6) you get up every saturday morning to start running at 9am
7) you blog about running
8) you want to watch "Chariots of Fire" instead of the latest new release movie
9) you have a running schedule - typed out
10) you run through the pain

dedicated to my running crew.  we are bad ass and hard core.

running an uphill battle. by orange

let me tell you - the husband definitely changed one thing about me. i now just detest running, rather than hating running. i feel that hate is a stronger word then detest. funny how when you are in a serious relationship likes/dislikes start to cross back and forth between the two of you.

the husband, is a triathlete - i didn't even know how to spell that word before i met him. and i still might have it wrong. anyway, he's crazy. he's done more than one handful of 1/2 iron-mans which include a ridiculously long swim, something like a 50+ mile bike ride and then to top it off, a 1/2 marathon - all in one day! i've watched one of his iron mans (same day we got engaged mind you) and it is intense. needless to say my 1/2 hour on the bike or 1/2 hour on the elipitcal felt just a tad lame in comparison.

thus new years 2008 i had a feeling of - maybe i should do something wacky - maybe start to run...maybe a 1/2 marathon! and let's be very clear here, prior to this epiphany i hated running. i would rather do any other sort of workout than running. and to be honest i probably didn't have endurance to run more than a mile. (and sadly, i thought i was in decent "shape" at that time). so i emailed some girlfriends - and off we set, to do a 1/2 marathon. crazy how that happens. of course i had to buy some cute running clothes and new shoes to keep me engaged along the way. which btw - buying "running" shoes does not make running any easier! i was highly disappointed when i laced up my new sneaks and found - wow running is still hard.

fast forward a year and a few months - a couple friends and i are gearing up to do not one, but TWO 1/2 marathons this year. one is in 2 weeks, the other is on the 1st wedding anniversary for yours truly (june 27th).

today was another long run...9.5mi to be exact. my running partner that is my same speed was down in portland, so i was running with my two other girlfriends. at about mile 6, my running mate wasn't feeling too hot and had to walk. which left me stranded. that sounds worse than it actually was but let me tell you - running by yourself is painful! painful!! at least for me. i need someone to swear at, someone to complain to, someone to talk to, etc. this is mainly the reason why running is still on the detest list...

next year i'm thinking - olympic triathlon in hawaii (thru team in training). i'm becoming even more of my husband.

these are people swimming during the triathlon in hawaii...looks pretty relaxing from this vantage point...too bad they still have a bike ride and a run afterwards! :)
